Police say the fatal shooting of an Auckland teenager is the third airgun death they know of and are concerned that people are treating the weapons as toys.
Zhivargo Williams, 18, appeared in the Manukau District Court on Friday charged with the manslaughter of Shaun Townsley and was remanded on bail until 13 March.
The 18-year-old was shot dead in January this year while he and some friends were drinking and shooting at cans with an air rifle at his home in Manurewa.
Detective Inspector Dave Lynch, who has been leading the investigation, said the type of gun being used can be bought by anyone over the age of 18.
Mr Lynch said Mr Townsley's death is a reminder that airguns are not toys and can be dangerous.
