Customs says a drug seizure has prevented up to $4.8 million worth of methamphetamine from reaching the streets.

About 15kg of Contac NT, which is the product used to make the drug "P", was intercepted at Auckland international airport over the weekend.

Three passengers from Hong Kong have been charged, along with two others.

Customs also made a separate, smaller seizure of Contac NT at the international mail centre.
