Quake off North Island east coast

5:52 am on 17 February 2013

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck nearly 200km north of Te Araroa on East Cape at 6.15pm on Saturday.

Although it was reportedly felt around the North Island, its impact was minimal because of its depth.

Geonet says the earthquake was centred 195km north of Te Araroa at a depth of 294km.

A spokesperson for the Gisborne police says she felt the earthquake but there have been no calls about damage or injuries in the area.
