More cycleway funding wanted

8:15 pm on 18 February 2013

A Hutt City Council member says the Government must increase funding for cycleways in the Wellington region to prevent more cyclists being killed by vehicles.

After the death of Superintendent Steve Fitzgerald, who was struck by a truck at the Petone Esplanade roundabout in 2008, the Hutt City Council built a cycle lane so cyclists can avoid the Petone roundabout.

Coroner Ian Smith has now recommended that the council review the intersection again.

Councillor Ross Jamieson says cyclists will never be safe while they are forced to ride alongside trucks.

Mr Jamieson says the Government has dropped funding for the next three years for a cycleway being developed along the Hutt coastline.
