Pair to stand trial for murder of sergeant

8:32 pm on 19 March 2009

Two men will stand trial for the death of a police officer during a covert operation in South Auckland in December.

A depositions hearing was held at Manukau District Court on Thursday.

John Skinner and Iain Clegg are charged with the murder of Sergeant Don Wilkinson and the attempted murder of his colleague.

Mr Wilkinson was shot dead after he and his partner were caught trying to install a tracking device at the Skinner house on 11 September 2008.

His partner, whose name is suppressed, gave evidence in a locked-down courtroom to protect his identity.

He described how the pair tried to hide before being tracked down and shot.

Mr Skinner also faces a charge of assault with a weapon for presenting a firearm at a third officer, who also has name suppression.

The accused have been remanded in custody, to next appear at the High Court in Auckland in April for a pre-trial hearing.
