Advertising through the internet is continuing to defy the global downturn.

The latest report from PricewaterhouseCoopers shows online advertising spending jumped 43% to $NZ193 million in 2008 compared to the previous year.

The dominance of classified adverts continues to slip, while the use of search engines such as Google has jumped dramatically

IAB New Zealand chief executive Greig Buckley says companies are shifting more of their spending on advertising towards the internet as people spend more time using it and the sites themselves get better.

IAB NZ represents online advertisers and hosting websites.

By sector: travel and accomodation and government departments used the internet more. Finance and banking fell.
