Temporary liquor licences in effect

9:44 am on 20 February 2013

The first of a series of changes under new liquor licensing laws is now in effect in Auckland.

Auckland Council is now issuing interim liquor licenses to new applicants which will expire at the end of the year.

These outlets will then have to apply for a new license under much harder criteria which take effect in June this year.

New liquor legislation being phased in over the next 1½ years, will give communities more say on where alcohol can be sold.

Auckland Council says new liquor licences issued until December are a temporary measure designed to stop a rush of applications under the previous law.
