Northland fire flares again

9:34 pm on 21 February 2013

Firefighters in Northland are battling a blaze threatening several structures around Kaipara Harbour on Thursday.

The large fire had been contained overnight on Wednesday but hot, dry conditions caused it to flare again.

The fire began in Tapora on the Okahukura peninsula on Tuesday night and has burnt through 90 hectares of scrub.

Fire Service spokesperson Jaron Phillips said several tankers from as far away as Matakana and Mangawhai were called to the scene just after 3pm on Thursday when an area that had been contained reignited.

Mr Phillips said the fire is threatening a caravan, some sheds and several other baches but they are not occupied.

Five fire crews remain at the scene late on Thursday night and helicopters are also assisting.
