No spectrum allocation for Maori

The Government has confirmed it will not be allocating part of the broadcasting spectrum to Maori when it comes available later this year.

The switchover to digital television has freed up the 700 megahertz broadcasting spectrum, which is to be used for fourth generation (4G) mobile phone technology.

Communications Minister Amy Adams on Thursday confirmed that the spectrum will be auctioned off by the Crown in the third quarter of this year.

Ms Adams said although Maori would not get a specific allocation, the Government is looking at setting up a $30 million development fund to help Maori gain benefits from new technologies.
