Man charged after rocket experiment fizzes

A Tauranga man faces charges for drugs and possessing explosives after trying to build a rocket which exploded.

Police went to a house in Welcome Bay after residents reported hearing a loud explosion that caused windows to rattle on Friday morning.

Senior Sergeant Carl Purcell says the 41-year-old occupant was with his teenage son and was building a rocket with gunpowder and other ingredients.

The man told police he got the mixture wrong, causing the explosion. No one was hurt in the incident.

Police found cannabis at the house.
