Corrections in denial over prison violence, says union

The Corrections Department is being accused of being in denial over the level of violence experienced by prison staff.

As part of an internal safety review, the department has been assessing whether it should give prison guards more personal protective equipment, including stab proof vests, batons, pepper spray and tasers.

Corrections Association president Beven Hanlon has seen the report's recommendations and says the department is no longer considering giving prison guards tasers, which he says is disappointing.

The department says it is yet to make any decisions about the review.
