Moderation the message at beerfest

Thousands of people have turned out to the Great Kiwi Beer Festival in Christchurch.

The South Island's largest beer festival is in its second year and is hosting 40breweries from around the country.

Organisers are putting an emphasis on educating people about how to drink beer in moderation.

Stallholder and Society of Beer Advocates member Geoff Griggs said the festival was an important opportunity to promote the responsible consumption of craft beer.

Mr Griggs said at any alcohol festival some people are likely to become drunk, but he hopes to educate festival-goers to appreciate beer and, in particular, non-alcoholic beer.

It was being held at Hagley Park from 11.30am to 7pm.
