Native birds being electrocuted at substation

2:02 pm on 23 February 2013

The Department of Conservation is asking energy provider Alpine Energy to put a net over its Aoraki/Mt Cook substation to prevent more native birds being electrocuted.

A member of the public saw a kea die at Alpine Energy's Unwin Hut Substation several weeks ago and reported the incident to the department.

DoC's Aoraki/Mt Cook programme manager Shirley Slatter said five kea and a native falcon have been found dead inside the compound in a 12 day period.

Mrs Slatter said the department would like to see a net used to keep birds out of the substation and is waiting to hear back from the company.

In the meantime, DOC has sprayed the substation with a kea repellent.
