The pateke are the first species to be returned to the wild as part of a $1 milllion Air New Zealand Great Walks biodiversity project with the Department of Conservation.

DoC says being able to encountering such a rare bird in its natural environment will underline the international reputation of the track for visitors.

Te Anau area manager Reg Kemper says DoC hopes to release another endangered species, takahe, into the area sometime next year.
