Prohibited fire season in Selwyn

10:19 am on 27 February 2013

Selwyn District Council will introduce a prohibited fire season on Friday.

The restriction means no outdoor fires can be lit, including the burning of crop stubble. Gas barbeques, with a water source nearby, can be used.

Principal rural fire officer Wilson Brown said the primary reason is to reduce the risk of fire in order to protect lives and property.

Fire permits issued by the council have been cancelled.
