Commuters in Wellington could be paying more for public transport later this year.

Wellington Regional Council intends to raise bus, train and harbour ferry fares by 2%.

That would take the average increase in fares over the past three years to 8%, but WRC chair Fran Wilde said it's necessary to cover rising costs.

However, she said the increase is smaller than originally planned, to ensure public transport remains affordable.

Ms Wilde said nothing will be confirmed before consultation with public transport operators, which will begin in late March.

If approved, the increase will take effect on 1 October.
