Bus driver stood down after crash

5:31 pm on 1 March 2013

The driver involved in a fatal bus crash in Manurewa has been stood down while a police investigation takes place, the bus company says.

An 86-year-old man died after the Howick and Eastern bus he was travelling in collided with a vehicle and a tree.

Two children and the driver are in a stable condition in Middlemore Hospital.

Howick and Eastern Buses director Bill Dalbeth says the driver who has been with the firm for seven years is extremely shaken.

As the driver is injured, he would not be able to return to work without a health check and would also need police clearance.

Mr Dalbeth said he does not know what caused the crash.

He understands the elderly man who died was a Manurewa local who used buses regularly.

Howick and Eastern Buses will be helping the Serious Crash Unit with its investigation.
