Christchurch police say they are hunting for a man following a serious assault on an elderly couple in their house.

A 72-year-old man suffered head injuries and an 80-year-old woman received head and arm injuries during the assault that involved a weapon in their home in the suburb of St Martins.

A police spokesperson said it is believed the person responsible is a male relative.

Police and ambulance were called to the house in St Martins Road shortly after 1pm on Friday.

The spokesperson says the attacker had left by the time police arrived.

They say the couple were conscious and taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.

Officers were carrying out a scene examination and speaking to neighbours on Friday afternoon.
