Two homes have been destroyed in separate fires in the north of the country.
The Fire Service says a house at Huapai, near Kumeu in Waitemata, was razed by a suspicious fire early on Monday morning.
By the time firefighters arrived at 2am one person had escaped the blaze. Crews searched the debris for another person thought to have been inside the house but the Fire Service says it is confident everyone has been accounted.
They suspect arson, and say two people are helping them with their enquiries.
An empty single-storey home was gutted by fire at Mangawhai in Northland that broke out before 10pm on Sunday.
An investigator will go to the scene today to try to establish how it started.
