Police have charged a man over the serious assault of an elderly couple in Christchurch.

A 72-year-old man suffered head injuries and an 80-year-old woman received head and arm injuries during the assault in their home in the suburb of St Martins on Friday.

Police had been looking for Douglas James Archer and arrested the 59-year-old in Linwood Park about midday on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darryl Sweeney said during the course of the arrest, Mr Archer injured himself with a knife and had to be taken to hospital.

He will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday on two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one charge of aggravated robbery.

Mr Sweeney said police have not found the car that Mr Archer was believed to have been using.

They are appealing for sightings or other information on the vehicle - a white 1996 Honda Accord LXI sedan, registration number UJ7255.
