An elderly woman is being commended for preventing a man from plunging into the Waikato River in Hamilton on Saturday morning.

Police say the woman, in her 70s, was out walking when she noticed a man sitting on the ledge of the Claudelands bridge.

She spoke to him and then grabbed him when he appeared likely to go into the river.

Other members of the public then came to their assistance.

The man was uninjured and police are discussing how to formally recognise the woman's actions, which they describe as being of the highest calibre.

Meanwhile, a man was injured on Saturday afternoon after seemingly falling from the Wilks Road overbridge in Auckland.
