Super-city council proposed for Wellington region

9:25 pm on 8 March 2013

A report by a local government working party is proposing a single, super-city council for the Wellington region.

The working party, which includes representatives from existing councils, is suggesting two models for a single council and mayor, with either one or two levels of representation.

The report does not say whether Wairarapa should be included.

The chair of the working party, Ken Douglas, says a single council would lead to stronger regional leadership and better infrastructure planning, and would save money.

Mr Douglas, who is also a Porirua city councillor, says councils will now vote on whether to seek public comment on the report.

The councils will lodge any reform application with the Local Government Commission by the end of May, he says.
