New Zealand has topped a glass ceiling index compiled by the publication, The Economist as the best country in the world for working women.

Based on data mainly from the developed nations in the OECD, the index compares 26 countries and found women in New Zealand followed by Norway and Sweden have the best chance of equal treatment at work.

It says New Zealand scores high across all five indicators, while Sweden has the highest female labour-force participation rate and Spain the smallest wage gap.

The index rates South Korea and Japan as the worst places to be a working woman.
