Policeman injured by thrown bottle after fracas

A police officer has received head injuries after being hit by a bottle while trying to break up a fight in east Auckland.

Four officers were called out to a party on Taurimu Avenue in Point England about 5am on Sunday and found a group of people fighting in the street.

Brawlers attacked the officers as they tried to break up the fight and one policeman was hit in the head by a flying bottle.

Officers called for back-up and police from North Shore and Counties Manukau were sent in.

"It took us some time to restore order and clear the address and the street," said Inspector Andy Brill. "It was probably frightening for those involved. It's not the sort of thing we want to happen."

Five people were arrested for a range of disorder-related offences, but Inspector Brill said due to the darkness and chaotic scene it is unlikely they will find the person who threw the bottle.

The injured police officer was treated by ambulance staff at the scene for a gash to his head.
