Board to manage 90 Mile Beach vehicle access - iwi

The creation of a new body for managing access to Ninety Mile Beach is being fast-tracked after a blunder with consultation about the British TV show Top Gear filming there.

Far North District Council has given the BBC programme approval to close a stretch of the beach for six days, while it records a car speeding along the sand.

Te Rarawa Runanga chairman Haami Piripi says a new board with representatives of the four local iwi and the council will be established immediately, instead of next year as planned.

He says Top Gear staff have been very amenable about conditions for filming on the beach, and it's the district council that failed to consult properly.

Mr Piripi could not say whether similar applications would be declined by the new board.

He said people need to ask whether they want the beach being marketed to the world as a racetrack, roadway or some sort of recreational drive spot.

Mr Piripi said it's quite a significant issue and there is concern about potential damage to crustacean life.

He said iwi will be at the beach advising film crews on beach safety when shooting starts on Monday.
