Whanganui Prison allows video visits

9:56 pm on 12 March 2013

Video conferencing units have been set up at Whanganui Prison to allow some inmates to keep in touch with friends and family.

The Department of Corrections says the closure of New Plymouth prison has made it harder for friends and family to keep in contact with prisoners who were transferred to Whanganui.

As a solution, the department has set up video conferencing units at the New Plymouth Community Probation Service Centre so people can make virtual visits.

It says the initiative has been a success so far and may be extended to other prisons.
