At 345 metres long, the Queen Mary 2 is the largest to visit Wellington and along with the Celebrity Solstice and the MS Bremen, it brought more than 8000 passengers and crew into Wellington for the day.

Tourism executives say it has been the best day so far in a record breaking season.

Positively Wellington Tourism chief executive David Perks says not only does that make it a record-breaking day, it has been the best season yet.

He says each passenger spends about $130 a day, so about $35 million has been brought into the city over the season.

The cruise industry is rapidly growing in Wellington with this season bringing more than 250,000 people - more than ten times the number in 2006.
