Police in Auckland say a station near one of the city's busiest night spots is no longer needed becau 3_news.4_web_news.air

se officers are using more mobile technology.

The plan is to close the Downtown Station in Fort Street, at the lower end of Queen Street.

They say they will move the 30 beat staff, and four support staff, to the Auckland Central Station, about a kilometre away on the edge of the city centre.

The District Commander, Superintendent Mike Clement, says the majority of officers will soon be working with mobile computers and that means the places where they need to be based will change.

If the plan goes ahead, the downtown station, in an expensive property zone, will be sold.
