Wildfire threatens marae at Kawhia

7:56 am on 17 March 2013

Firefighters and a helicopter battled a large blaze in the Waikato coastal town of Kawhia that burned through just over a hectare of dense scrub and destroyed a caravan.

The fire service says six fire engines and two water tankers fought the blaze along Aotea Road, near the Okapu Marae.

It says the fire reported on Saturday afternoon initially threatened some buildings at the marae before it was contained.

The cause has not been established.
