'English-only' rule unacceptable to union

9:23 pm on 4 April 2009

The Tramways Union says it's unacceptable for a Wellington bus company to make its employees speak only English while at work, even during their breaks.

It claims that Mana Coach Service has directed its employees to use only English while behind the wheel and at the depot.

Union secretary Gary Froggart says the rule is not workable as the buses are often carrying passengers from a range of backgrounds.

He says he's not aware of any other bus companies with similar rules.
