Mayor says Auckland owes New Zealand an apology

The mayor of Waitakere City Bob Harvey says Auckland owes the rest of the country one big apology for messing up so badly over so many years.

In his monthly written report to the Waitakere City Council, Bob Harvey says almost everything done in the region over the past 50 years has been second rate, from architecture to infrastructure, to its planning and vision.

He says the Royal Commission's recommendation that a super-city be established is the rocket-fuel to makes things right.

Mr Harvey says it's a great gift to be given a second chance to get it right.

He says the Auckland region is a glorious landscape that can live up to its promise, and there's now a great determination to make that happen.
