The gust blew concrete tiles off the roof of a shed in Carrington Street about 8.30pm on Monday.
MetService said a broad swathe of thunderstorms were moving through New Plymouth at that time, and tornadoes are possible in such conditions, but it cannot say for sure.
The forecaster said it may well have been a sudden downburst of wind that did not rotate as tornadoes do.
