Call for 'eat more fish' campaign

New Zealanders must be persuaded to eat more fish, says the head of the country's largest Maori-owned fisheries company.

Aotearoa Fishing chief executive Jeremy Fleming says the latest figures shows fish coming a poor fifth in the protein battle, and there has to be a push to increase domestic consumption.

Mr Fleming told the Maori fisheries conference in Napier that New Zealanders ate twice as much chicken than fish each year.

He says company research on people's attitudes to eating fish shows that they find it divine if it's straight from the sea; but they're put off buying it from supermarkets because of price, poor presentation and the absence of information about when the fish was caught.
