Dunedin college to improve water trips policy

A Dunedin college will change its policy for water-activity trips after the near-drowning of a group of students at an unpatrolled beach.

Columba College's board of trustees has produced the report on the incident in which a dozen teenage girls were caught in a rip on a school trip to Goat Island beach on 1 March.

Seven girls were hospitalised with hypothermia and water inhalation after being rescued by surf lifesavers who happened to be training in the area.

More than 80 teenagers and 25 caregivers were on the trip, an event the school said it has been running for more than 10 years.

Board of trustees chair Margot Skinner says the college will better consult with experts about the level of risk and supervision needed.

Ms Skinner says if it is appropriate to bring in lifeguards, then that will happen and students will also have more frequent beach safety training.
