Auckland police have arrested four people after an 18th birthday party got out of control and erupted into a drunken street brawl.

Officers were called about 2.30am on Sunday to the Russell Road area of Manurewa where large groups of teenagers were fighting each other with bottles and wooden fence palings.

Counties Manukau police say officers were attacked as they tried to break up the brawl, but no one was seriously injured.

About 40 officers, a helicopter and two police dogs were used and it took about 40 minutes to clear the street.

About 25 residents called police over the incident.
