Big increase in surf lifesaving callouts

8:34 pm on 25 March 2013

Surf lifesavers have been called out 30,000 more times to help prevent people getting into difficulty this summer than they were last summer.

Twelve of the 31 people who drowned during the official three months of summer died at beaches - twice as many as last year.

A spokesperson for Surf Life Saving's northern region, Tom Burgess, says the greater number of people on beaches because of this summer's fine weather has created challenges for lifesavers.

Mr Burgess says although the official summer period is over (it ended on 28 February), lifesavers are still being called out to emergencies after hours.
