Researcher wants feral pigs controlled

A researcher is calling for feral pigs to be controlled in some conservation areas, following a new study highlighting the destruction of forest vegetation.

Dr Cheryl Krull from the University of Auckland says research carried out in the Waitakere Ranges shows wild pigs are damaging forest floors, reducing plant diversity and affecting the levels of important plant nutrients.

Dr Krull is recommending the animals be controlled in areas where there are endangered plant species, to reduce their impact on the ecosystem.

She says teams of hunters and dogs would kill the pigs.
