The search for a man missing from his yacht north of Auckland is continuing with police and navy dive squads using sonar equipment to search the seabed.

Donald Ravenscroft was last heard from on Sunday evening when he phoned his wife to say he would be driving home to Wellsford from his mooring in Mahurangi Harbour.

His car keys and phone were found on the yacht but his 3-metre inflatable boat had been tied to a tree on the other side of the harbour.

Its outboard motor and a pair of wooden oars were missing but have since been found.

Sergeant Bede Haughey of the Warkworth police says it is possible Mr Ravenscroft swam after the dinghy when it drifted away from the launch.
