Frenchwoman jailed for drink driving

A Frenchwoman has been sentenced to jail for two months for driving on the wrong side of the road on New Year's Day.

Her lawyer, Mike Newell, says she now faces deportation.

Susie Suptille, who was working as a cleaner, was sentenced to prison in Queenstown District Court on Tuesday, with Judge Kevin Phillips saying he had no other options available.

Mr Newell says because she was already facing deportation, a community sentence was not considered.

Judge Phillips told Suptille she treated the police and court process with absolute contempt.

The police prosecutor says she blamed the New Zealand law for driving on the wrong side of the road, where she hit a taxi coming the other way.
