Christchurch restricts areas for brothels

Christchurch City councillors have voted to ban brothels from the port town of Lyttelton and to restrict where they can be located throughout the city.

The council passed a bylaw, which will restrict brothels to mostly industrial suburbs in Christchurch, on Thursday, with 12 councillors voting in favour and two against.

The bylaw was introduced after the earthquake displaced brothels based within the central business district, forcing businesses and streetworkers to relocate to the suburbs.

Councillor Glenn Livingstone says the council was not able to come to an agreement on regulations for single owner operated brothels and the council will revisit it in a year.

The bylaw will come into effect in April.
