Oamaru firm set to join 9-day fortnight scheme

7:17 pm on 9 April 2009

A struggling North Otago company looks set to ask the Government for permission to take up the nine-day fortnight scheme.

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union and National Distribution Union says they have successfully negotiated an arrangement with Summit Wool Spinners.

EPMU lead organiser John Gardner says the wage top-up is a critical part of the deal because workers simply cannot afford to take another hit in the pocket.

If the application to the Government is successful, it will save 57 Oamaru jobs from being lost to the recession.
