EQC may be back emailing next week

The Earthquake Commission says its email service will be reinstated next week at the earliest after another email privacy breach.

The commission and the minister responsible for it apologised on Thursday for sending information to a Christchurch man about 2200 claimants and details of about $23 million of uncashed cheques.

The man was sent a spreadsheet about a month ago but only contacted the commission earlier this week.

When he didn't get a response, he contacted Christchurch East Labour MP, Lianne Dalziel, who revealed the breach in Parliament on Thursday.

The minister responsible for the commission, Gerry Brownlee, ordered the commission to shut down its email service while an investigation takes place.

Another privacy breach last week involved more than 80,000 claims.
