The Corrections Department says the rate of prisoners found to be using drugs has dropped to a record low.

The department says 10.5% of inmates are returning positive results from random drugs tests, the lowest rate since random testing was introduced in the late 1990s.

Corrections spokesperson Leanne Field credits the result to an increase in the number of drug dogs in prisons and more secure visiting facilities.

She says most drugs are brought into prisons either by visitors or people who drop them on prison grounds.
