Brothel bylaw 'discriminatory' - collective

10:18 pm on 29 March 2013

A spokesperson for the Prostitutes Collective says a Christchurch City Council decision to ban large brothels in Lyttelton is discriminatory.

Councillors voted on Thursday for the bylaw to ban brothels from the port town and to restrict where they can be located throughout Christchurch city.

The bylaw was introduced after the earthquake forced brothels and streetworkers based within the central business district to relocate to the suburbs.

Prostitute's Collective regional director Anna Reed acknowledges there was strong opposition from Lyttelton residents.

But she believes residents' fears are largely unfounded and the decision is discriminatory.
