Six people rescued off North Island mountains

A number of people were rescued off North Island mountains on Saturday.

Four separate incidents led to six people being rescued from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu by Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organisation.

Trampers sustained ankle, knee and head injuries on the mountains.

A police spokesperson says the high numbers of people in the Tongariro National Park for the holiday weekend, combined with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing still being partially closed, has meant more people doing the alternative route of Mt Ngauruhoe.
