Scrapped Teletext service important for deaf, says foundation

The deaf community says the closure of the Teletext service will make it harder for them to get information.

Television New Zealand is ending the text-based information service on 2 April, almost 30 years after it started, saying it has been struggling with breakdowns and repairs caused by ageing technology.

National Foundation for the Deaf chief executive Louise Carroll says deaf people often use the service to get updates on news and weather, and people on disability allowances or fixed incomes often cannot afford the internet for that purpose.

Ms Carroll says gaining access to information is already a challenge for deaf people and the elderly.
