Jesse Ryder's manager says the Wellington cricketer and former Black Cap is making very encouraging progress after being assaulted.

Ryder is recovering in Christchurch Hospital from a collapsed lung and fractured skull after being attacked near a bar in the Christchurch suburb of Merivale the early hours of Thursday morning.

Manager Aaron Klee told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme Ryder has been moved from intensive care to a general ward and is able to walk around.

Mr Klee said Ryder is devastated he will miss this year's Indian Premier League as he was hoping to use the competition as a benchmark to gauge if he was ready to return to the Black Caps.

He said the player will suffer fatigue and weakness for some time because of what was a serious concussion.
