Police investigating an attack on an Auckland man in his retirement home say they're looking for a suspicious person seen fleeing the scene.

Louis Watts, 85, was knocked unconscious when he confronted an intruder inside his unit at the Seventh Day Adventist Retirement Village in Wiri about 7.45pm on Wednesday.

Mr Watts came to about an hour after the attack and rang police.

He is recovering in Auckland Hospital after suffering serious facial injuries.

Police say a witness, who had been visiting a family member at the village, reported seeing a man in his mid to late twenties jogging out the rear gates.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karyn Malthus says the police are investigating whether the man may have been taking a short cut through the village.

Mr Watts suffered facial injuries and is recovering in Auckland Hospital.
