Blaze at Christchurch demolition yard under control

7:04 am on 4 April 2013

The Fire Service has brought a large fire at a demolition yard in Christchurch under control.

A huge pile of recycled fibreboard caught fire early on Wednesday at Southern Demolition on Owaka Road, Hornby.

The Fire Service says it was alerted at 2am and found a blazing pile of fibreboard 400 metres long, 300 metres wide and six metres high.

Two fire trucks, two tankers and a truck with a turntable ladder were at the scene.

Workers from the company operated diggers to turn over the burning material so crews could extinguish the fire.

The Canterbury regional council is monitoring the level of toxins coming from the smoke.
