The 34-year-old man accused of the rape of a 13-year-old girl in an Auckland reserve on Sunday 12 April has been denied bail.
In the Auckland District Court on Wednesday afternoon Judge Josephine Bouchier ruled that it was in the public interest for the man to remain in custody while the strength of the evidence, particularly the DNA evidence, was assessed.
Judge Bouchier also lifted the man's interim name suppression but his lawyer appealed against the ruling, so the name cannot yet be published.
The teenager says she was attacked as she walked in the suburb of Waterview just before 10am on Sunday.
The accused man faces three counts of sexual violation, one of detaining the girl, and one of forcing her to smoke cannabis in order to render her incapable before sexual violation.
